Avant Garden 8110-3 Looking Glass Hummingbird Feeder

Comment: Very pretty and different from the usual plastic feeder with plain red flowers. The feeder is huge, which I don't need, it is just a waste of nectar because the birds don't even make a dent in it in a weeks time, and then it is time to throw it out. If you have a lot of Hummingbirds it will work great for you. I only fill it up a little ways. The wasps are really attracted to the feeder also, and seem to be able to get nectar out of the rim at the base. I put out a wasp trap next to the feeder to try and keep them away. The only other problem I have with the feeder is that it doesn't have enough red or color on the feeder. I have read that you shouldn't put food coloring in their nectar, but I only found that out after I already bought red nectar. So I am hoping that the hummingbirds will still be attracted to this after I start using clear nectar. Before I got a feeder I used to see a coupe of hummingbirds a year, and now I see a couple a week. So that is great! I've seen them feeding out of the flowers of the feeder, so I am happy with it.

Comment: Bought 2 of these for my mom & dad - Mom loves copper and stuff that's ornate (feeders, gazing balls, fire pits, waterfalls, you name it). These were right up her alley. To be honest, I don't know how many hummingbirds it's attracting, but it certainly is nice to look at! I plan to get a couple of these for our back yard / garden area as well.

Comment: I love this feeder, but can see where some people may not be entirely happy with it. The first thing, is that while it doesn't look that large, the bottle holds 2 to 3 times as much syrup as other feeders I have had. I put 1 cup of nectar in mine and it just clears the neck, so if seeing the bright red liquid in your feeder is part of the enjoyment, it may be disappointing. I only have 2 or 3 hummers at a time and I don't want the nectar to spoil before it needs refilling. A half size feeder would be great.

Filling and putting the feeder back together isn't difficult, but it can be tricky to make sure the metal top with the flowers on it lines up the reservoir. Even when it wasn't lined up perfectly though, I didn't have any problems with leakage. I have had it long enough that it's been through the one kind of weather that usually causes the biggest issues for me. I live in a windy area, and in spring there are times when I seem to have had to refill other feeders once a day or more because the wind is strong enough to tip the feeder and blow all the syrup downwind - what a mess! There were high winds in the month since I got my feeder and not a drop was spilled. This alone makes this the Best feeder I've ever had! If it isn't going to get syrup everywhere, I may move it closer to the house, so I can enjoy the birds' activity more.

There were also a couple days of heavy rain, which is highly unusual where I live in the southwest, but it showed what may prove to be a weak point of this feeder for other people. I noticed by the second day that enough rain got into it that the syrup had turned light pink. If it rained a lot where I live, I wouldn't hang it in the open where water can get into it. The other metal feeder I had, had the lip of the metal flower cover over the reservoir, the metal top on this one fits inside the reservoir, which may allow for the water to get in. I was surprised that water could literally fill UP inside the bottle when it's hanging.

I am giving it 5 stars in spite of the 2 caveats because a feeder that doesn't empty out when the wind blows has been like finding the holy grail for me.

Pros: This is an attractive, wind proof feeder

Cons: It could easily be half the size, although then it may not be so wind proof. Heavy rains can cause dilution of the syrup.

Comment: I bought this as a Christmas gift. It came and I was floored. It's truly beautiful and very feminine and lovely. Upon opening it my sister in law was stunned. Now, I would like one for me.

Comment: They were just excellent about letting me know me item was out of stock and canceling the order so I could shop elsewhere for my mothers gift. They accidently shipped it to me anyway and took care of that issue as well immediately without hassle. Just great to deal with when there is a problem!!!
