The second year I placed it up by my deck and close to a natural woodsy area of our yard, right beside a hummingbird feeder. For some reason, the orioles tried to feed from the hummingbird feeder and the hummingbirds went for the oriole feeder. Once I placed grape jelly and an orange on the top of this feeder, those orioles got smarter in a hurry. That summer I noticed an oriole kept landing in the big cottonwood tree in my backyard, and I often saw him at the very end of a branch. Turns out there was a nest hidden in a cluster of large leaves at the end of that branch. One Saturday morning I got to see dad encourage one of the babies to come out of the nest. So would I recommend this feeder? You bet . . . it's not every day you get to see a baby oriole leave his nest. Be sure to keep the feeder stocked in grape jelly...Read more 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful: By Pepsi_Kat (St. James, MO USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Birds Choice - Oriole-Fest Oriole Bird Feeder - 12 oz This is the best oriole nectar feeder I've found. It comes apart easily, is easy to clean, and sits flat for filling. I sometimes just set the feeder on a table instead of hanging it. The male orioles grip the brass hanger and lean down to feed. I call them my pole dancers. It's quite comical to watch. The orioles and hummers came to the feeder almost as soon as I put it out. However, I recommend you do NOT put jelly in the indentations. As another reviewer reported, that is very dangerous to hummingbirds. They can't get to the nectar ports without being right between 2 piles of jelly. I also found a hummer stuck in the jelly. I took it inside & cleaned the jelly off the best I could and then let it go. It did fly away, but I always put the jelly in a separate dish after that. This feeder is still the best nectar feeder around. I had an oriole feeder with the soft ports, and the ports actually stuck on the orioles bill when he pulled back from the feeder! I...Read more 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful: By This review is from: Birds Choice - Oriole-Fest Oriole Bird Feeder - 12 oz This is probably the best oriole feeder out there, 3-in-1 & you just can't find another one like this. Also it has an integrated ant moat that protects the nectar & the grape jelly stations, but NOT the 1/2-orange, so beware. If its hook comes in stainless color instead of brass, I'll give it 5 stars. I haven't seen a single oriole yet but have faith that I will, and that it's not the feeder's fault. |
