I have been using this particular model for some time now...only one of them. We have a very large woodpecker population along with Jays and other birds who delight in suet feeders. Most of my feeders are of the front loading, heavy wire type which are also extremely effective. This one is a bit different though.
The design allows easier access for the longer tailed members of the woodpecker clan such as the pileated woodpeckers we have here and the northern flickers and indeed the red-bellied woodpeckers. Small birds such as the hairy woodpecker and its little cousin, the downy woodpecker along with various nuthatches, creepers , titmice and chickadees find easy access also. Now there are plusses and minuses to using this feeder. One, it is easy to load (it is a top loader. Two, it allows access for the birds from both sides. It is easy to clean and fill and has held up well, much better than wood feeders. The tail prop is large enough for the Red-bellied woodpecker. The reason I am giving it 4 stars as opposed to 5 is that the metal stays to create the hanging loop and screw inserts show rust, you would think that a non-rusting material like aluminum would be used instead. I like the fact that it is made from re-cycled bottles and made in the US. Per the Bird's Choice website Home Page: The poly-lumber (made out of recycled milk jugs) and inland red cedar products, along with the metal feeders (color domes, small domes, forever feeders) and the aluminum purple martin houses are all made in Chilton, Wisconsin, U.S.A. by a team of dedicated conscientious employees. The feeder is hanging under the roof eaves of my second floor condo, next to my balcony to deter squirrels and racoons. This review is from: Birds Choice Recycled Single Cake Tail Prop Suet Bird Feeder with Hanging Cable These are perfect for woodpeckers. The extending wooden piece makes it inviting for the birds to position themselves. The feeder doesn't tend to become as moldy as others. The cage is narrow so the suet fits in well and is easily accessible from either side.
I will order more of these. |
