The narrow diameter (8") allows the squirrels and large birds (such as grackles) to hang on one side and tip the birdfeeder inside the cage so that they can still reach the seed. It needs to be much wider in diameter. The 15" cage around the Droll Yankee feeder is the perfect size--I can tell you from experience that that feeder indeed foils large birds AND squirrels, but is retailing at $85. This would be the ticket to all our birdfeeding woes if it were 15" diameter. Unfortunately, no one--even Droll Yankee--offers that size in a retrofit cage. Ticks me off, as they obviously know that is the magic dimension, and us poor suckers that already invested $35 in a tube feeder think we might save money by buying a retrofit cage for $35 vs. a whole new system for $85. They also need to make the feeder stationery in the retrofit cage so that larger animals cannot use the tipping method to get their pie holes closer to the feed.
