The selective feeder contains seed in a 15-1/2-inch recycled polycarbonate tube. Birds perch before six metal seed ports to eat. A metal cage-style casing surrounds the tube, keeping pests away by allowing only small birds to pass through the gaps in the casing to dine. A metal cap tops the feeder to thwart damage from eager claws and teeth and Duncraft's squirrel-lock secures the tube inside. To satiate squirrels and large birds without disrupting the smaller birds' meal, discarded seed falls through the feeder's wire base to the ground. The feeder offers a loop for installing the feeder from tree branches or from an overhang. Users should regularly clean the feeder with equal parts water and white vinegar to protect the birds from bacteria and disease and restock with fresh seed. The feeder holds approximately 1-1/2 pounds of seed. Birdseed is not included. The full feeder spans 17-1/2 inches in length with a 10-inch diameter. This item weighs 5-1/2 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

These squirrels have NO problem climbing through the wire mesh and resting comfortably on the feeder's bottom while they eat their fill. Also, Norway rats (the bane of birders throughout the U.S.) easily get through the mesh. My solution was to buy metal torpedo squirrel baffles for the poles. It was an expensive solution, but it has been 100 percent effective. Also, don't buy the bird feeder cleaning brush advertised by Duncraft. It doesn't fit this feeder because it can't get by the metal tubes supporting the openings. And invest in a pair of pliers to help you wrench open the plastic bottom seal on the feeder. All in all, the feeder is effective in keeping out large gray squirrels, jays, crows, pigeons, and such birds, and it keeps the seed dry in the rain. Chickadees, nuthatches, warblers, titmice, and...Read more 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful: Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Duncraft 171 Squirrel Proof Selective Feeder (Lawn & Patio) A bit pricey but worth the money. A truly squirrle proof feeder that will last longer than ten of your usual home center feeders. I have two other Duncraft feeders which I purchased 15 years ago which are still in daily use. 22 of 28 people found the following review helpful: By We put a similar feeder [with squirrel-proof caging] up in our yard, hoping to deter the squirrels, and it did. Sadly, we lost 3 sparrows in the process. So many little birds clammered into the feeder, that when something spooked them, and they all tried to get out at once, 3 of them broke there necks in the mad rush. That is NOT acceptable! We immediately took it down and trashed it. I'd rather put up with the squirrels than lose even ONE bird! This type of feeder should be OUTLAWED! |
