Amazon.com Review
Invite the cheerful song and beauty of birds into the backyard with this covered platform feeder from Duncraft. Designed to accommodate birds of all sizes, the feeder discourages bushy-tailed visitors with its Squirrel Blocker screen system. Adaptable for hanging or post-mounted display, the bird feeder provides nourishment for birds all through the year.

Duncraft constructed the platform feeder entirely in metal for durability in all weathers, while prohibiting chewing from squirrels or other mammals. To keep squirrels out of the birdseed, the platform uses two grids and mesh screen to provide beak access only. The feeder holds up to 1 pound of sunflower seeds in its tray. The overhead metal roof protects birdfeed from excessive rain exposure. Small holes in the feeder base allow ample drainage to further discourage mold and mildew from developing. To clean the feeder, users can take the platform apart without difficulty. Users should regularly clean the feeder with equal parts water and white vinegar to protect the birds from bacteria and disease and restock with fresh seed. For the best results, hang the bird feeder near trees and bushes rather than in the open where birds feel vulnerable to predators. To stand upright, the feeder fits on any 1-inch diameter post. The feeder does not come with birdseed. Duncraft offers limited five-year warranty for this item. The feeder tray measures 14-1/2 by 12 by 1-1/2 inches while the roof spans 16 by 13-3/4 inches. The 10-1/2-inch tall feeder weighs 6.3 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

Summary: The birds love this...the squirrels not so much... 2010-06-06
Comment: We've had this feeder for several months now...there are never not any birds on it! We have two cardinals that come several times a day plus several sparrows...the birds love this feeder! We have found the squirrels on here occasionally (we have a significant squirrel population), yet they are not able to eat from this the way that they have from other feeders. Although annoying, it is not an overwhelming concern as it has been with our other feeders. This feeder is a little more expensive than others, but we believe well worth it!

Summary: Arrived Damaged-- Birds and Squirrels don't like it 2010-04-09
Comment: This bird feeder arrived in only the thin store display box which was crushed and not sealed, the feeder is usable but dented, grid is racked and roof has scratches. I did report this, but after a week of waiting no one has responded to my report.

The feeder has been mounted in my backyard for a week now and ready for the birds to enjoy, but not one bird has been seen feeding from it nor has a squirrel found either.. I filled the tray with the oil sun flower seed as recommended, so I am totally disappointed !! I will soon give up on my expected flock of birds enjoying my feeder.

Summary: Not a bird feeder--a squirrel feeder! 2010-01-06
Comment: I am an avid front and back yard bird feeder and had high hopes for this feeder. Sadly, I was very disappointed. We tried hanging it from a hook and installing it on a pole and in both formats it provided a wonderful platform for the neighborhood squirrels. Today it's back in its box, to be returned to Duncraft for a credit. I'm still hopeful about finding a truly squirrel blocking platform feeder, but this isn't it!

Summary: Duncraft 1744 Champion Squirrel Blocker Platform Feeder 2009-11-09
Comment: One of the best bird feeders that I have purchased. It performs as advertised in preventing squirrel's form enterning the feed area.

Summary: Not really squirrel "proof" 2009-07-29
Comment: Buyers need to be aware that although this is advertised as squirrel "proof" it is only partly true. Squirrels who can access the platform can easily use their weight to slide the sunflower seed to the very edge of the platform and then persistently work at retrieving one. Although it is true that they can't access the majority of seed due to the design of the grid, the fact that there is the potential to get a few seeds is enough to make this feeder attractive to squirrels. In my yard, birds rarely had the opportunity to get on the feeder although the chickadees and titmice loved it when it was not occupied by a persistent squirrel. There are better feeders out there that do truly keep squirrels not only off the feeder but unable to get seed. The only way this would work well is if you can mount it in such a way that squirrels cannot access the platform.
