I ordered this after going through many fabric "socks". The fabric ones were being chewed by some bird or mammal so had to be replaced constantly. This unit fixed that problem. It doesn't hold quite as much as it looks - less than one of the fabric socks I was using. It does leak quite a bit when filling it - I have to hold it over a container to avoid losing the expensive nyjer seed. Not sure to what extent seed leaks as it sits out. The goldfinches adapted quickly to it, and empty it out in a little over a day. I haven't seen other critters/birds on it, such as house sparrows or squirrels.
To release the top you just pull on it, and push it back in to close. It stays on just by friction. I was a little concerned that it might just open on its own while hanging, but so far (2 months) we haven't had a problem.
Be careful when closing the top. The wires that keep the top attached to the housing push back in along the sides of the tube. If you're holding the tube...Read more

Unfortunately, I have super-squirrels and they chewed and bent it and knocked it down. The bottom and the ports are perfect for them to hang onto, so I had to take it away and replace it with something more squirrel proof.
