pretty to look at but the birds don't like it much, and I am afraid it is too fragile to last more than a season

Birds do love it, and it probably will only last 1 season. These pockets are not designed to be long lasting, just offer seasonal protection for your birds. It is nice to see the birds enter these types of bird houses at dusk for extra protection from winter winds.
