Heritage Farms Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder - Bird Seed Vault II

I selected this brand of feeder because I had been so impressed with another model manufactured by Heritage Farms (the 2 sided squirrel proof feeder). But this one seems poorly designed and we were never able to figure out how to get it to operate correctly. I donated it to a charitable organization hoping someone there could figure it out. BUT I still love my original model!

This seemed like a good idea. It's perfect for chipmunks and squirrels who sit on the sides to avoid the trap door closing. It's like watching circus performers, but it doesn't stop the squirrels or chipmunks. We actually had a chipmunk taking a nap in one of the trays !!

First the squirrels sat on the flat roof and kept their weight off the perches to easily feed. We added a makeshift top hat to the roof to discourage this (why don't they make dome roofs for these things?!), but even the largest of squirrels now simply rests on one perch with all hits weight while easily feeding from the other. I've yet to find any feeder that is squirrel proof, and those that are closest to it loose so much seed on their own they might as well let the squirrels feast :(
