The birds are protected by the overhang of the rood while feeding, and with multiple drainage holes in the seed tray, seed stays fresh and dry. The built-in seed diverter keeps seed fresh moving it to the feeding area.

For several years I have used a Stokes Select Giant Combo Bird Feeder. I have liked the feeder because it stands up well, allows me to put a lot of sunflower seeds out at one time and is easy to fill. I was gone for several days and after returning I noticed an American Goldfinch perched on the feeder in an odd position. Upon closer inspection I found that the bird had gotten its head caught in one of the feeding portals when it was attempting to reach in for seeds. I suppose if this was a baby crib it would be recalled but since it is a bird feeder I'm not sure anything will happen. It took quite some time to extract the dead bird. It appears that the feed was just about level with the bottom of the feeding portal so it was able to get it head completely in the portal and then couldn't extract it's head.

Today I had a second bird die in the feeder. The only way to remove the birds was to decapitate them.

Come to think of it, you could feed Big Bird with this monster. I haven't weighed it yet but it is not one you would want to host over your head when full unless you have the governators build. I was thinking it might bend my 1-1/2" steel pipe. I would give it a 5 star's but it's so huge it has scared all my birds away for over a week. They won't even feed from the other feeder's next to it that they used to fight over. Gives new meaning to "bird brain". Saving money on seed though...

For those love birds, this feeder is for you! I love the fact that it has two separate compartments to hold two types of seed, allowing many types of wild birds to feed. This feeder also has a mesh body, which will allow more birds to hang onto the feeder and eat the seeds through the mesh, should the 12 standard perches be occupied.
